Allergen & Ingredients Guide

Allergen & Ingredients Guide

At Flappy Joe's, our food is built around fresh ingredients, clear preparation standards, and a commitment to avoiding unnecessary additives. We prepare Caribbean-inspired wings, rice bowls, sides and drinks with a focus on simple ingredients, bold flavour and honest food.

Our recipes are designed to avoid unnecessary processed ingredients, artificial colours, E-numbers, seed oils and avoidable additives wherever possible. We want customers to feel confident that they can ask what is in their food and receive a clear, honest answer.

However, food safety and allergen safety are too important for assumptions. This guide explains our approach, the information customers should know before ordering, and why anyone with an allergy, intolerance, coeliac disease or severe sensitivity should speak to us directly before placing an order.

Important Allergen Notice

Flappy Joe's recipes are designed to be simple, carefully selected and additive-conscious. However, customers with a food allergy, intolerance, coeliac disease, or severe sensitivity should not rely on website wording alone.

Ingredients, supplier products, packaging information and preparation conditions can change. For that reason, customers with allergies or intolerances must speak to a member of staff before ordering.

We will always do our best to provide clear information about ingredients, preparation methods and any possible cross-contact risks.

The 14 Regulated UK Allergens

UK food businesses must be able to provide information where any of the 14 regulated allergens are present as ingredients. These allergens are:

  1. Celery
  2. Cereals containing gluten, such as wheat, rye, barley and oats
  3. Crustaceans, such as prawns, crabs and lobster
  4. Eggs
  5. Fish
  6. Lupin
  7. Milk, including lactose
  8. Molluscs, such as mussels, oysters and squid
  9. Mustard
  10. Tree nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios and macadamia nuts
  11. Peanuts
  12. Sesame seeds
  13. Soya
  14. Sulphur dioxide and sulphites above the legally specified level

Flappy Joe's will always aim to provide clear information where any of these allergens are present as ingredients.

Our Ingredient Philosophy

Flappy Joe's aims to prepare food using carefully selected ingredients and clear cooking methods.

Our food approach is based on the following principles:

  • Freshly prepared meals
  • No intentional use of seed oils
  • No intentional use of artificial colours
  • No intentional use of E-numbers
  • No unnecessary additives
  • Clear ingredient information
  • Honest communication with customers
  • Careful handling and preparation standards

Where possible, we aim to use ingredients that are simple, recognisable and suitable for customers who want food made without unnecessary processing.

Are Flappy Joe's Meals Suitable For Allergy Customers?

We treat allergy suitability wording carefully.

Claims about suitability for people with allergies or intolerances require strict controls over ingredients, handling and preparation, especially where cross-contact could occur.

For that reason, our safer position is:

Our recipes are designed to avoid the 14 regulated allergens wherever possible, but customers with allergies or intolerances must speak to us before ordering so we can check the latest ingredient information and preparation controls.

This is the most responsible way to protect customers and ensure information is checked properly before food is prepared.

Cross-Contact

Cross-contact can happen when a food that does not intentionally contain an allergen comes into contact with an allergen through ingredients, equipment, preparation surfaces, packaging, supplier handling, storage or staff handling.

At Flappy Joe's, we aim to reduce cross-contact risks through careful preparation and clear kitchen procedures. However, because ingredients and supplier products can change, we cannot rely on assumptions.

If you have a food allergy or intolerance, please speak to a member of staff before ordering.

Customer Responsibility

If you have a food allergy, intolerance, coeliac disease, or severe sensitivity, please tell us before placing your order.

Please do this even if:

  • You have ordered from us before
  • The dish appears simple
  • You have seen a claim online
  • You believe the dish does not contain your allergen
  • You are ordering for someone else

This allows us to check the most up-to-date information and advise you properly before your order is prepared.

Takeaway, Collection and Delivery Orders

For takeaway, telephone or online orders, allergen information should be available before the customer places the order and again when the food is delivered or collected.

For this reason, customers should tell us about allergies or intolerances at the point of ordering.

When ordering by phone, please clearly state:

  • The allergy or intolerance
  • Whether the allergy is severe
  • Whether the order is for a child
  • Whether cross-contact is a concern
  • The exact dish you are considering

Prepacked Food and Natasha's Law

Most Flappy Joe's meals are prepared to order. However, if any food is packed before the customer orders or selects it and sold from the same premises, it may fall under the rules for Prepacked for Direct Sale, also known as PPDS.

Under Natasha's Law, PPDS food must be labelled with the name of the food and a full ingredients list, with any of the 14 regulated allergens emphasised within that list.

Where relevant, Flappy Joe's will follow the appropriate allergen labelling requirements.

Children's Meals

We take children's food and family orders seriously.

If you are ordering for a child with an allergy, intolerance, sensitivity, or specific dietary requirement, please tell us before ordering. We will do our best to provide clear ingredient information and advise on suitability.

Please do not assume that a dish is suitable for a child with allergies unless this has been checked with us directly.

Menu Items and Ingredient Changes

Our menu may change from time to time. Ingredients, sauces, drinks, packaging and supplier products may also change.

This means allergen information should always be checked at the point of order, especially for customers with allergies, intolerances or medically restricted diets.

We reserve the right to update ingredients, recipes and supplier products without notice, but we will always aim to provide honest and accurate information when asked.

Sauces and Seasonings

Many of our flavours come from sauces, marinades, herbs and seasonings. These can sometimes contain ingredients that are not obvious from the name of the dish.

Customers with allergies or intolerances should always ask about sauces, marinades, toppings and sides before ordering.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Honey jerk sauce
  • Lemon and herb sauce
  • Sweet chilli sauce
  • Curry sauces
  • Bang bang seasoning
  • Any yoghurt-style or plant-based sauce
  • Any imported drinks or packaged products

Drinks

Some drinks may be supplied by third-party manufacturers. The allergen and ingredient information for packaged drinks will usually come from the manufacturer's own label.

Customers with allergies, intolerances or sensitivities should check the drink label before consuming and ask staff if they need help identifying ingredients.

What Customers Should Do Before Ordering

  1. Tell us clearly about the allergy or intolerance.
  2. Ask about the exact dish, sauce, side or drink they want.
  3. Ask whether any relevant ingredient information has changed.
  4. Ask about possible cross-contact.
  5. Avoid ordering if they are not satisfied with the information available.

Our Commitment

Flappy Joe's is committed to providing clear and honest ingredient information.

We will:

  • Treat allergy and intolerance enquiries seriously
  • Provide ingredient information where available
  • Check labels and supplier information where needed
  • Avoid making unsafe assumptions
  • Be honest where we cannot guarantee suitability
  • Continue improving our food safety and allergen procedures
